Database administrators are responsible for ensuring database availability. Critical business processes mandate strict data restoration time windows in the event of unexpected disasters. Oracle Data Guard technology available only as a feature of Oracle Enterprise Edition provides a comprehensive set of services that create, maintain, manage and monitor standby databases. However it is still possible to create a manual standby database on Oracle Standard Edition platform. This paper provides an insight into available options to create and manage a standard edition standby database by using home grown scripts and a DBvisit Standby software.

Alen Prodan is currently working at Login d.o.o. His main interests are logical and physical database design, the query optimizer and computer performance management. Mostly he spends time designing Oracle systems and helping customers to get the most out of Oracle. He earned OCP certification in Oracle 9i, 10g, 11g database administration.
